Even with the ‘Cats on the road, there was still plenty of baseball going on at “The Joe” on Tuesday. The Houston Astros regional scouts held their annual open tryout at the ballpark yesterday morning. Players from Massachusetts, western New York, New York City, and of course the Capital Region were on hand to display their skills.
Most of the participants were high school or college-aged kids trying to catch the eye of the pro scouts. They were put through a variety of drills designed to showcase their tools in fielding, hitting, running, and throwing. Best of luck to all of the talented players who were in attendance as they continue with their baseball careers!
Later in the evening, the championship game from the Capital Region Series pitted the defending champs, Trustco Bank, against CAP COM Federal Credit Union for one final game. This game was the culmination of an eight-team tournament that began in June. This tournament was a fundraiser for the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation with the proceeds used to help renovate youth baseball fields throughout the Capital Region. The other competitors were: First Niagara Bank, BBL/The Recovery Sports Grill, GE, Key Bank, DeCrescente Distributing, and SEFCU. Special thanks to all eight teams for their participation in a great tournament!
Both teams were well represented with their co-workers, family, friends, and fans cheering them on throughout the night! Trustco raised the bar . . . literally as they had a plane fly over head with a banner displaying: “Let’s Go Trustco” to the crowd.
Trustco grabbed an early 2-0 lead but CAP COM kept it close until the end. Trustco plated a few late insurance runs and ultimately emerged as the Capital Region Series Champions for the second year in a row! Congratulations to Team Trustco! Thank you again to all the teams for your participation and we look forward to doing it again next year!
