Hockey on the Diamond!
There is just something about ice hockey being played in a different setting than a traditional arena that is appealing. Since 2008 the NHL has held their annual Winter Classic at different outdoor venues, with the most recent being the one held at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia (home of the Phillies) between the Rangers and the Flyers.
In 2010 the NHL Classic was held at Fenway Park and was a huge hit. So this year they decided to build upon it’s success and stage a two week long event coined “Frozen Fenway.”
From January 1st through the 16th, Fenway Park had public skating opportunities and played host to both high school and women’s and men’s college hockey, including Schenectady’s own Union College.
The final two games were held on Saturday, January 14th and was fittingly named the “Boston Rivalry Doubleheader.” In the first game, two bitter high school rivals in Catholic Memorial and Boston College High School matched up against one another. Our Assistant GM Matt Callahan is an alum of BC High School and was in attendance. BC High won the game 4-0.
The finale pitted D1 Hockey East rivals Northeastern University and Boston College with BC pulling out the victory 2-1.
Below are some pictures that Matt took from his trip…Enjoy!
